When are they going to learn that we want sandbox games to play in and to create our own world, not to have our hands held from start to finish?

Or at the very least sandbox ENDGAME.

wait, what? They're getting rid of people?

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthre ... dit4435219

so much for the big deal that they made about not downsizing the dev team once the game had launched, last i heard there was speculation they had actually increased the team by pulling devs off dragon age.

we are bidding farewell to some talented, passionate and exceptionally hard-working people who helped make SWTOR a reality

so why get rid of them?

Ooofff. They really couldn't have timed that announcement any worse could they? With all the bitching going on about the state of the game the last thing punters need to see is the Dev team shrinking. I wasn't expecting that.

EDIT: Cheers btw Zum, that's going to be my drama fix for the evening.

Looks like Stephen Reid is one of them, so the layoffs are pretty high profile as well. Well, he's not a dev but was the main community guy.

hmm lockjaw seemed to do a pretty good job in community relations. I wonder if bioware/EA have internally decided to try and blame the sub loss on poor relations with the players rather than any issue with the game and so have had to follow through with a sacrificial lamb.

Is the main theme in that thread now. Over 100 pages too.

Post of the day here:

Quote:
Star Wars: The Old Republic’s development team is shrunk down and add the fact that BioWare’s lost 400,000 subscribers (about 19/. million dollars a month.

400,000 subs would need to be paying over 45 bucks each a month to hit 19mill. :laughing3:

It's interesting though, isn't it? People are almost talking it out of existance. And there does seem to be a lot of shaddenfraude about it, oddly. It's hit that self fullfilling prophecy of death...

Damn, damn shame, cos I love it.

This was an interesting little read:

http://tobolds.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/so-how-is-swtor-doing.html

The guy is looking at US servers only.
It looks like Bioware are writing off 90 servers and saving 10 in the US. With 23 others that have no action on them yet.

That is an awful lot of lost subs, if this is any indication.

Of course I fully expect Daniel Ericson to go into damage control mode with a "we have new technology that allows far more people on each server" or somesuch.
But anything that guy says now I totally disbelieve. For me he ranks up there with Brad McQuaid and John Smedley.

the guy is jumping to conclusions a little.

The people on those 90 servers have been given a free transfer if they want it, to a pre-selected server.

Anyone who doesn't take the free transfers stays on their server. Bioware have said nothing at the moment as to what happens to those who don't transfer. I assume if there is 1 sub left on the origin server then BW will probably force that person to jump to another server and shut it down but if there are a few 100 on the server they may well leave it to carry on.

I think the ultimate plan is to close those servers down but they don't want to force anyone yet.

This isn't a bad thing really, full servers > empty servers.

People also seem pleased by the process, it only takes a couple of minutes and you keep the legacy and everything.

yeah i read a similar article over lunchtime.

It's an obvious move to try and shore up numbers but i don't see what they could monetise to allow it as F2P atm.

RMT works fine for vanity items and options but if they start trying to go down the route of RMT for premium content the game would go downhill fast.

There are so many items they could get away with RMT'ing already but which are already abundantly in-game (legacy would have been an obvious RMT option), i don't see how they could do it now.
